Join the 50th Pct. Auxiliary Police Force

By Robert Press

BRONX- At last week’s 50th Precinct Council meeting, Auxiliary Police Captain Edwin Molina spoke to the community asking for residents to join the 50th Police Precinct Auxiliary Police.

So just what is an Auxiliary Police officer, and how do they differ from a regular police officer. For one thing Auxiliary police officers do not carry any weapons. Nor are they authorized to make any arrests or issue any summons. An Auxiliary police officer does wear a full police uniform complete with an official police vest. An Auxiliary police officer will be assigned to assist in crowd and traffic control at certain events such as street fairs or at certain sport events which may require police officers. Auxiliary police may also do routine tours of duty in low crime areas to assist in coverage as another set of eyes for the precinct. Finally an Auxiliary police officer will be treated as one of the force with respect from the police officers they assist, and especially by the commanding officer of the precinct. An Auxiliary police officer will never be placed in harms way, but can be of great relief to the community as a deterent to the bad guys who wind up going away when they see the uniformed Auxiliary police officer.

If you are interested in joining or want more information about the 50th precinct Auxiliary police program you can stop by the 50th Precinct house located on Kingsbridge Avenue on the corner of West 236th Street, next to McDonald's or call the Community Affairs officer Ramos at 718-543-5978.

This Thursday at 2 pm is a walking tour of the Kingsbridge Business District. The tour will begin at Councilman Andrew Cohen's office located at 277 West 231st Street. It will proceed to Broadway, turn up Broadway to West 238th Street, then turn onto West 238th Street to Bailey Avenue, where it will then go down Bailey Avenue to Tilila Cucina Restaurant for an informal discussion about the tour with light refreshments being served. It is hoped that Councilman Cohen and others can see and then listen to ideas on how to improve the Kingsbridge Business area.

At last week’s Community Board 8 full board meeting the vacant position of Treasurer was filled by a vote of the board members. Congratulations to the new CB 8 treasurer Ms. Amy Joy Robateau, and I have no doubts that Ms. Robateau is very capable of handling the position. I hope she knew the job before accepting the position, and all the work that is required of the office of Treasurer. I hear, however, that there may be another position opening up by the end of this year possibly. More on that in upcoming columns. Now that talks about reviving the 421A tax break for building affordable housing should be back on the table in Albany comes the new legislative session, I am looking for the vacant site on Riverdale/Oxford Avenues at West 238th Street to be developed after the 421A program is back in business. I also am looking for the property to be sold to a developer such as one who is building on Broadway. With the new Zoning Regulations put in place by Mayor Bill de Blasio a smart developer of market rate housing could construct a twenty story building provided there is a community facility and at least twenty-five percent set-aside for affordable housing. As for parking that could be minimal if not optional.

Lastly, I want to give my congratulations to the local elected officials on their Election Day victories. I also want to offer my condolences to the Ben Franklin Democratic Club, and Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz on the defeat of their candidate for president. As I visited poll sites I noticed that there was no one outside poll sites giving out palm cards for candidates. I was able to speak with Assemblyman Dinowitz, and ask him why that was.. Dinowitz answered me by saying that candidate Clinton was easily going to win the Bronx, so why waste people by having them standing at poll sites since there were better ways to use them. Upon arriving at the Ben Franklin Democratic Club later that evening, BFDC members were still making calls to voters in other states, while those who were absent were still in states that were considered key states handing out election material.

As the results started to come in I could see the shock and disbelief on many of the faces in the clubhouse. As the night wore on people were leaving to go home early and try to figure out what was happening. As it went the BFDC closed hours before a winner was declared.

Don't forget to check my blog at for more on the election, and why I think Donald Trump won the presidential election. By the way I had predicted a win for President Donald Trump a full 10 days before the election.
